Spring Cleaning #30: Take a Load Off Our Drives

And away we go....

1-I use the S drive all the time; Mainly for when I send Stephanie T. stuff to print for me. If she doesnt' delete them when she is done, I do next time I am in the folder.

2-P drive is a little tougher. I have put stuff there, but most of the children's stuff is stuff that our previous childrens librarian put there and I only use on occasion. I really hate using flickr because it is so so slow whenever I use it and I don't have the patience to wait, so I will put them on cd's whenever my order for new ones finally arrives. A circ assistant, who will remain nameless swiped all my cdr's and now I have none! I will revisit it later & see what I can delete, if anything...computer is running slow at the moment. Well, I deleted some stuff on p drive and it keeps malfunctioning. Egads!!

3-Can't get rid of much on z drive; need it.

4-Since I've not even been here 2 years yet, I don't think anything that I delete would shock anyone. No, I'm not more organized than I thought I was. I am pretty organized on my computer, it is just my desk that could use an overhaul.

Spring Cleaning #29 Email

Okay-
1-I have my own email account for personal stuff.
2-I already have folders in my work email for a variety of things...srp 2007, srp 2008, schools, volunteers, workshops/conferences, etc.; I try to keep on top of this as emails come in so I don't "lose" emails in my inbox because they took more time than I had at the moment to reply to and then get buried. I cleaned everything out thoroughly in January, but probably could do it again.
3-My address book is already up to date and not too overly big; I update it everytime I get a message saying address is wrong, etc. and don't include addresses I rarely, if ever, use, especially if they easily accessible elsewhere or I just know them.
4-My account is relatively up to date and relatively uncluttered. It could be better, but then I would have to do something like skipping storytime & I don't think I want to do that. ha ha

GTD seems to be a lot like what I try to do now, although I do have a tendency for things get lost in my email box if I don't write myself a list of to do's. I try to do easy things as soon as possible already. It is just easier than trying to remember to do it later. I looked at Google calendar, which is easy for me to access since I already have a gmail account that I use. I could use it for big things, but I wouldn't go as far as putting my grocery list in it. That would probably be my electronic calendar of choice, although I still tend to like my calendar that I can write in and take with me where ever.

Final Post (thank goodness)
Favorite things were probably avatars, librarything, video, and library elf(even though I don't use it). I'm sort of used to learning online and independently, so I don't really think that this was really a big revelation for me, although it was nice to get credit for learning about this stuff. It wasn't hard for me, but some of my co-workers toiled for hours on some of this stuff for whatever reason. This course is not bad for people who are used to using computers, but for those who could barely get by to begin with, it was extremely time consuming.
If we had more teens and college kids in our library, we might get asked questions more (but they probably know how to do this stuff anyway), but most of our clientele is middle age plus or young families who either don't have time to do this stuff or are having trouble using the mouse and don't really care about all the 2.0 stuff. I imagine it will trickle down (or up) to them eventually, but I think having their own email account is a major accomplishment for some at this point. Most of this stuff I will probably not bother with after this is over because of time constraints and some of it just doesn't interest me enough to want to do it anyway. Ho hum. or Bah humbug? (ha ha)

Ok, I just lost my post. This topic is more useful than others we have learned about; at least with respect to what patrons ask about. I think more people are using now than not too long ago, but viewing books online is still iffy. Most people would rather have the book in hand, unless desperate. Audio books I could potentially listen to are Igraine the Brave by Cornelia Funke and Musicophilia And Other Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks. It is good to see that we have gotten the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper; very good series. Most stuff I saw that was of interest was stuff I had already read. Videos could be of interest as well, children's anyway. I looked at librivox as well; they had classic public domain type books in a variety of languages. Wowio was not a thrill for me either.

Ok, I looked at this, and it is interesting I think, but not really something I would listen to on a regular basis. The only time I can listen to stuff is when I'm in the car and I would rather listen to books or music than podcasts. I put one called Book Bites for kids in my bloglines account. This podcast airs interviews with children's authors. They do put music in podcasts & I found a bunch of that as well. I looked at podcastalley.com and podcast.net. This could be useful if you are really interested in this type of thing, I just don't have the time.

Well, I had imbedded a video of Marilyn Horne singing C is for Cookie on Sesame street, but I can't see it when I pull up my blog. I saw it once, but is just a blank spot now. I'm not going to bother with a ticket however. This is the link at any rate. C is for Cookie This would have been so great to have when I was in music school. It would have been wonderful to see other people perform stuff that I was doing. Lots of neat videos, many of them from when artists were early in their careers. I can't imagine that all of this stuff can't be violating copyright; if the artists aren't putting this stuff up, how did they get the footage...lot is from tv that has been recorded. Even filming stuff for library sites would involve copyright issues...storytimes for instances, books, songs, etc.

Below is the document I submitted via zoho writer. Isn't it grand? I really don't have anything to say today. The online ability to create documents is neat and I didn't know you could do it before, but not sure I would use it much. I'm not really ever in the position to use a computer that isn't mine. I guess it could be good for students though, who use libraries or computer labs wherever they can.

The children were crazy during storytimes today. Not the angels they usually are. It might be the weather. The last time it got cold all of a sudden they were crazy as well. I have another craft program this afternoon and I can't wait!

This, unfortunately, is one of those things that I just don't have time for on a regular basis. It is neat, but just can't see myself keeping up with something like this. Dogster was cute, but again, with work and children and a husband that is pretty much like a 3rd child, I just don't have the time or even the patience to do something like this. The others didn't really catch my interest much, but I can see how they would be popular with some people. I guess if I had to use one it would probably be facebook. Some of the others are little too odd for me. I signed up for facebook & dogster; I am almost certain I won't use them, but oh well. Dogster is neat though because you can list or find dogs up for adoption.

I commented on one of my co-workers blogs. I just seem like I don't have much to add; maybe it is just because I not as much in to technology as some are. I mean, I use it, but I don't really feel the need to get into debates about it. What do I say about anything related to technology? I like it and find it useful, but I am not consumed by it. Of course, I find some things more useful than others or more fun, but not neccessarily things I would do on a regular basis. A lot of the things we have been looking at definitely do have potential for my own use or regular use by libraries, particularly wikis. Library thing is neat as is library elf, but not sure if I will keep up with either one of them. The thing about technology in the library that irks me I suppose is that there are people that refuse to use it and only do so fighting and kicking the whole way; I think an open mind is neccessary if you are going to be able to learn how to use it in the first place.

I posted my blog to iHCPL's sandbox wiki; I also put my favorite board game up, which happens to be chinese checkers. There are definite advantages for libraries to have public wikis, including pathfinders that the public can add to, although mediated would probably be best. I can definitely see them being used, as they already are in some places. Staff book reviews would be neat too.

Week 6, #15 Library 2.0

Well, I read several of the articles that were linked to this exercise. Library 2.0 doesn't really seem that novel to me, but maybe that is because I am relatively young, and definitely young to librarianship. What it basically means is that things are never cast in stone and always changing. You can't wait for things to be perfect. You need to give people what they want and expect or they will go elsewhere. You need to make services user friendly; this means from a user's standpoint and not what a librarian thinks is user friendly. People do not want to be bothered with training to be able to use a library's services, nor do they want to have to read about it as an alternative to training. The hardest thing I think to deal with are the people who don't agree that this should be the way things are to be done.

Yes, there is a difference in searching the blog directory and the blog posts. The directory gave better results. I got all kinds of "stuff" when I did the post search. I found that my computer at work is not compatable with the videos on technorati and it is something I don't have access to to fix. Really, I didn't find this to be too much of a thrill, maybe I am not "with it" enough to find it so. Maybe I have too many other things on my mind. As for tagging posts & claiming my blog... I would, but I don't really think that I'm doing anything that would interest anyone other than those who are checking to see if I did what I was supposed to do. Also, I really didn't find anything interesting or exciting...finding a lot a junk was not really surprising.

Del.icio.us I have created my account. I can see the use for this because I can use it on different computers, but I did upload some links I have at work and it is a pain because I have to go through and re-tag them since they apparently get their own tags from del.icio.us.

Ok, library elf is kind of neat. I can see the benefit of it, especially since we live in an area where you can use more than one library system and also be able to keep track of your husband's & kid's stuff as well. Since I'm at the library all the time, I don't know if I would use it a lot unless I am at home and can't remember what my husband's library card number is.

Library thing is pretty neat too. I don't really buy many books anymore, but I suppose I could keep track of what I have read. My widget is on the right side of my blog with random books from my measley 10 or so entries. Just don't look for adult books because I don't read any. Yes, I know it is pitiful, but I just can't seem to get interested in any of them that I try to read, except for classics, but does that really count? Learning about image generators is definitely better than learning about RSS feeds. Not that I have any more use for this type of thing, it was more fun playing with them. I kept having trouble with the yahoo avatar generator though; the site would conk out shortly after I tried using it two different days. So I went with the comic strip generator and meez.

Ok, I have looked into searching for RSS feeds in more depth.
I looked at Feedster, Topix, Syndic8, & Technorati.
I did not find any of them hard to use.
Truly, everybody & their brother, uncle, mother, & cousins has their own blog.
Too much information for me I think, mainly because I don't have time or space in my brain left over for the piddlings of "famous" people, let alone real news. If I need something I generally find it when I want it. Unfortunately I have yet to find a feed that I can live without.
At least I can do it if I need to, provided I don't forget my passwords & user names.
